The Digital Frontier of AECO: Digital Transformation with Microsoft
Our speaker this week is Salla Eckhardt, Director of Transformation Services with Microsoft. Salla is an innovation leader and an industry change agent specializing in the digital transformation of the building project lifecycle. She has been recognized as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking people in the industry for unifying a clear vision around the Digital Building Lifecycle framework: consolidate physical, social, and digital environments and empower end-user experiences with emerging technologies. Salla has authored and co-authored multiple award-winning publications on emerging technology, innovation, BIM, and construction management impacting the $217 trillion real-estate business.
Salla made a compelling case for the massive digital leap our industry needs to take as a whole. Through new digital sensor technology and the Internet of Things, each component of a building creates a large amount of data that can be utilized all across the building project lifecycle. From concept, to design, construction and building operation, we should be able to use tools like digital twins, BIM, and the advanced manufacturing methods of Offsite Construction to integrate every step of a project into a unified whole.
As our industry advances, it continues to remain fragmented, with different parts moving at their own place and developing their own unique software. But in order to truly bring AEC to a place where projects happen as predictably and efficiently as possible, there needs to be a synergy between all these technologies. While Offsite Construction has unlimited potential for improving the speed and accuracy of the building process, it still needs to be integrated with every other piece of the project lifecycle to be successful. Achieving this unity of a Digital Building Lifecycle is what Salla calls the Digital Transformation.
